Working on a log home plan and have some questions.  Log home companies do not seem to want to assist.  Does anyone know of a site where you can get answers to more technical questions about log home design and construction?

Blueforester,

You could post your questions here and where you are planning to build, I'm sure you will get some good feedback.

Hello Blue,

Log Home Companies are reluctant to give advice regarding construction because they sell "logs/lumber", they do not actually build the logs into a home. This is not their expertise. Our builder and the engineer who stamped our plans were tremendous sources for technical questions.  Another recommendation would be to locate a builder or GC who specializes in structural repairs and/or log home restoration.  During these economic times, many builders will be glad to meet with you and offer free advise in the hope of gaining a client.  Your local county or state construction permitting authority will be another resource for technical questions (at least ours was).

Greg L:

Well if what you are saying is true, why is a company out there, offering free log erection?

Blue,

They're in business to sell lumber (logs). Just like HD and Lowes are in business to sell 2x4 lumber (not completed homes).  Not only do they not offer "free log erection", but they do not offer any log erection.  That's the "hook".  Would anyone be interested in looking a brochures or magazines filled with pictures of logs?  Nope...  That's why the beautiful brochures and renderings of completed log homes. But they do not sell "HOMES" - just "logs".   They all (almost all) should drop the word "Homes" from their company name.  Instead of "Greg's Lome Home Company" - it would be better stated "Greg's Log Company"...  Take the time and visit the next "log home show" in your area and ask if any of the log "home" companies actually build the home.

Back to your original post:

Addition to my original post, you might try "construction forums" via Google:  like Loghomebuilders.org and join the forum and see if someone can help.  On a personal note: we discussed with our builder using a combination of siding and full logs on our home.  Based on his recommendation, we opted to build with full logs (including the prowl).  Home built in 2007 and we have not had any settling issues.  One more thing:  the technical drawings from our builder were very detailed.  see this link as an example: http://www.thelogconnection.com/details.php

this may help...

Thanks for replies and information.  I continue to talk w/ different builders and look at new homes under construction.   It amazes me the amount of variation in construction techniques b/w builders and log home companies.

What is interesting to see is how firm and convinced the contractors are that their method, or their preferred log home supplier's method, is the best way and only way to properly build a log cabin.  They all give you that same look when you inquire why they use a certain method versus another.

I'm finding that there is no one method that is superior to another when it comes to log home construction.  What matter the most is the quality of the contractor.
